‘Restoring quality of life through better vision...’ A new FDA approved option for keratoconus filling the gap between contact lenses and a corneal transplant! ICI’s are two half rings placed through a small surgical procedure in the cornea at around 70% depth, to flatten its central area and hence readjust its conical shape. They come in 5 different sizes (thicknesses): 0.250, 0.300, 0.350, 0.400, 0.450 mm, and have a hezagonal cross-section, yet they are all implanted at 7-8 mm diameter (outside central optical zone). They are indicated also for use in the correction of some mild nearsightedness and astigmatism cases.
Intacs-SK are newly developed implants (rings) with smaller implantation diameter (6 mm) yet still outside the central optical zone, and are designed to treat steeper corneas. Intacs SK have elliptical cross section and come in two sizes (0.400 and 0.450 mm). Intacs-SK are designed to maximize the effectiveness of Intacs for severe keratoconus cases by providing the broadest field of vision.
